Improve 2G Spectral Efficiency to Enable UMTS Re-Farming

 

Many operators have, or are considering, spectral 're-farming'. That is, to move different technologies to different frequencies to maximise their spectrum assets. One of the more common scenarios is the re-farming of UMTS to 900MHz.

Indoor locations provide arguably the most challenging Radio environments. RF signal propagation is variable and, when provided by the macro network, has limited penetration causing areas of poor, or no, signal. In addition, the additional traffic being generated puts a strain on the capacity of the local network resources. This has led to the creation of 'hot spots' where demand exceeds capacity, resulting in poor service experience.

 

The impact of both coverage and capacity on customer experience is essential to understand. Plans to increase coverage and capacity need to be developed and acted upon. These include increasing macro capacity and deployment of in-door solutions such as small cells, DAS and repeaters. Each of which will have advantages and disadvantages.
